BS 3692 Bolt Size Chart
Bolts are mechanical tools used to connect two or more parts with each other. Technically they are mechanical fasteners that come with a nut on them. A joint that is bolted can be disassembled and reassembled easily. This is one of the many reasons bolts are used comparatively more than other mechanical fasteners. They also have a great role to play in the manufacturing of steel structures.
BS 3692 bolts are specific types of carbon steel and come in various metric sizes ranging from M1.6 to M68. There are numerous types of BS 3692 bolts such as eye, wheel, and machine bolts. These BS 3692 bolts contain structural grades that allow quenching and tempering. Due to the effectiveness of these bolts, they are used abundantly. The BS EN 3692 bolts have good ductility and malleability while BS 3692 Carriage bolts have very good strength and tolerance.
1. What is the British standard for bolts?
British Standards were established in 1901 in order to standardize steel sections and screw threads that are used in manufacturing. First called the British Engineering Standards Association (BESA) until 1931, later it was renamed the British Standards Institute and remains operational even today. 2. How to Measure the Size of a Bolt?
BS 3692 bolts come in various sizes. However, there is a specific way in which bolt sizes are measured. A single bolt’s size is specified based on various dimensions like the bolt’s diameter, the length of the shank, the pitch of the thread, grade, the length of the thread and the size of the head. Although bolts can be measured in the metric of millimeters, the standard, international unit to measure bolts is in inches.

If you are looking for a suitable bolt for an assembly, these are the steps you need to follow in order to find the most accurate one.
Step 1: Measure the diameter of the shank
The bolt’s shaft is known as the shank. The shaft’s diameter is the first dimension that is used to measure the size of a bolt. You can use a calliper or a bolt gauge to measure this.
Step 2: Determine the pitch of the thread
The number of threads per inch on the bolt’s shank is known as the thread pitch. You can simply count the number of threads in one inch to calculate this particular measurement. If the length of the shank is lesser than one inch, then the number of threads needs to be multiplied to reach a complete inch.
Step 3: Measure the length of the shank
The length starting from the tip of the fastener where the shank meets the head is to be measured.
Step 4: Determine the grade of the bolt
The grade of the bolt is determined using the type of metal that is used when manufacturing the bolt. This is indicated by the markings on the head of the bolt. However, as you cannot remember all the markings and their specifications, here is a complete guide for finding the grade of bolts.
Step 5: Determine the shape of the bolt’s head
Most bolts have a hexagonal shape (six-sided). However, in some cases, bolts with a four-sided square-shaped head or a dome-shaped head are required.
Step 6: Measure the length of the threaded portion of the bolt
Unlike in step 3, where we measure the length of the whole shank, in this step, it is required to only measure the length of only the threaded portion of the bolt. When you want to choose between a standard hex bolt and a fully threaded tap bolt, this measurement can come in handy.
3. How to understand the bolt size chart?
Bolts are measured using several factors like diameter, pitch and length. For instance, in M16-1.0*20, ‘M’ refers to the metric thread designation.’8’ refers to the nominal diameter (in millimetres), 1.0 refers to the pitch, and 20 refers to the length. A detailed view of the standard measurement used to determine the standard size of a single bolt to serve your purposes is given in the next section of the article.
4. What is the Standard Size of the BS 3692?
Although nuts and bolts come in various sizes, their application may differ according to the requirements.
• For hot-dip galvanized nuts, the dimensions apply before galvanizing.
• P is the pitch of thread.

• Incomplete thread u = 2P
